thought-provoking episode of the Inclusive Dad Podcast, host Jewell Young sat down with Jay Young, a dedicated mental health clinician and host of the Young Dad Podcast. Together, they unpacked what it means to truly embrace inclusion and foster equality in our families, schools, and communities. Here's what we learned.
The Heart of Inclusion: Equal Access and Empathy
Jay's definition of inclusion is rooted in history and practicality: ensuring everyone—especially children—has equal access to opportunities and environments. "Kids don’t see hate," Jay noted. "They learn it." By addressing biases early and teaching empathy, we can create a world where children grow up valuing diversity instead of division.
Jay emphasized the importance of teaching children how to connect with others without prejudice. Empathy, he explained, is more than just understanding—it’s stepping into another’s shoes and walking alongside them. This approach can heal divides and build stronger, more inclusive communities.
Living with a Rare Disability
Jay also shared his journey of living with Anderson-Twail Syndrome, a rare neuromuscular disorder that caused periodic paralysis and challenges growing up. Despite being bullied and facing misunderstanding from peers and teachers, Jay's resilience and determination shaped his commitment to helping others.
His experiences instilled a deep sense of empathy and a passion for advocating for youth and families. Today, as a mental health clinician, he uses those lessons to guide and support others, proving that challenges can be turned into strengths.
Inclusion Starts with Action
Jay urged parents and caregivers to take small but impactful steps toward inclusivity, beginning with checking personal biases. He put it simply: "You’re not better than the people you shop at Walmart with." Recognizing our shared humanity can transform the way we interact with others and model behavior for our children.
Connecting Through Conversation
As the host of the Young Dad Podcast, Jay has made it his mission to reach a million parents, offering a platform for honest conversations, practical advice, and moments of connection. Whether through parenting tips, fitness resources, or mental health support, his goal is to help listeners become better individuals and parents.
This inspiring conversation reminds us that inclusion isn’t just a lofty ideal—it’s a daily practice. From fostering empathy in children to breaking down personal biases, we all have a role in building a more equitable world.
